When do you need an air duct installation?

There are two scenarios that warrant an air duct installation. The first scenario involves a new build where no air duct system exists, or you’re adding on to an existing system. The second scenario falls under air duct replacement. In some cases, your air duct system may be improperly sized, damaged, or you’re renovating your home to the point that a new air duct system makes the most sense.

How does an air duct installation work?
01
1.

Load Calculation

The first step to a successful air duct installation is performing a proper load calculation. This involves calculating the heat loss and gain in each room. The load calculation tells you what rooms need ductwork and which ones can do without.

2.

Select the Right Ducting

You can choose from sheet metal or flexible fiberglass hose. Sheet metal is the most common as it’s tried, tested, and durable. Sheet metal is also easier to install and stays cleaner longer. Flexible fiberglass can degrade over time and is more difficult to clean.

3.

Duct Design Map

A Henry Mechanical project manager performs a pre-site inspection and creates a detailed design map to match the load calculations. Having an accurate design map is critical to the success of your duct installation project.

4.

Air Balance Test

After your new duct system is installed, our quality control technician performs an air balance test. The test checks load calculations and even airflow. If any adjustments are necessary they’ll be performed during this phase of the installation.

Title 24 HERS & Building Inspection

The final phase of your duct installation involves a special third-party inspection called a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rater. HERS verifications are mandatory in nearly all new homes and existing homes where new or replacement HVAC systems or ductwork are installed.
