What are HVAC Zoning Systems?

An HVAC zoning system (also referred to as “zoned HVAC”) is a heating and cooling system that uses dampers in the ductwork to regulate and redirect air to specific areas of your home. This allows for the creation of customized temperature zones throughout your home for increased comfort and efficiency.

What if you could control the temperature in particular parts of your home on your terms? For example, on a cold evening what if you could boost the temperature in your bedroom up a few degrees while leaving your basement temperature several degrees lower? With an HVAC zoning system you can customize zones within your home to meet your comfort needs when you’re using the room and save energy in areas of the home that aren’t in use. With the increasing costs in gas prices, an HVAC zoning system can quickly pay for itself.

Is an HVAC Zoning System Right for Your Home?

Most homes can benefit from a zoned HVAC system. It’s hard to find a perfectly efficient home – most homes have rooms that are either consistently too hot or too cold, and family members have different temperature preferences. An HVAC zoning system allows you to accommodate all of those different needs, while at the same time helping you save energy costs. HVAC zoning is particularly helpful in homes with large windows, multiple-story homes, and for rooms on south-facing walls that are difficult to keep cool in the summer months and rooms on north-facing walls that are difficult to keep warm in the winter months.

How do HVAC Zoning Systems Work?
01
1.

Zone Control Panels

The zone control panel is the central control that communicates between individual room thermostats, dampers, and HVAC equipment. It’s mounted by your equipment and is the brains of your entire zoning system.
02
2.

Thermostats

Thermostats read the air temperature in each room (or zone) in your home. If the temperature is too cold or too hot, the thermostat sends a signal to your control panel telling it to either release more cool or warm air depending on your set preferences.
03
3.

Zone Dampers

Dampers are placed in your HVAC ducts to control the airflow to rooms (or zones) of your home. The dampers are wired to a specific zone on the control panel, which is controlled by a specific thermostat in your home. Your dampers will automatically open and close depending on your customized control settings.
