What to Know About California Gas Appliance Bans
People in California and beyond have likely heard quite a bit about the Golden State’s upcoming gas appliance bans. There’s been a lot of talk about these laws, their implications, and what it would mean for the average homeowner. Henry Mechanical in Sonoma County, CA, is here to break down everything you need to know about the California gas appliance bans to cut through the misinformation and educate you on what you can do to prepare.
Why is California Phasing Out Gas Furnaces and Appliances?
In 2020, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) voted to ban the sale of new gas appliances within the state, including furnaces, stoves, and more. This is part of the state’s effort to go carbon neutral by the year 2045, coming hot off the heels of various other changes like the gas car sale ban.
While this policy may not be ideal for some, the ban has a good amount of thought behind it. California is notable for the smog that pollutes the air around most of its cities. The major component of this smog is nitrogen oxide gas, which is emitted by gas appliances. Research has found that around 5% of this pollution comes from homes alone, with a majority of that pollution directly relating to gas heating appliances.
There is also a plurality of research that indicates gas appliances can lead to worse health outcomes within the home. Childhood asthma and allergies go up in correlation with gas appliances, especially stoves. This only gets worse as these appliances age and become less able to contain the gas flowing through their lines, with gas gradually leaking into the air. Even taking away the risk of fires, breathing this in continuously isn’t good for us.
When Does the Ban Go Into Effect?
The sale of new gas appliances will go into effect in 2030. As a homeowner, you will not be forced to upgrade to a non-gas version of any appliances in your home. This simply means you won’t be able to purchase any replacements starting that year. It also means that newer homes and buildings will also not include gas lines in their construction, both because of the ban and the end to gas subsidies that came in tandem with this ban.
Options You Have as a Homeowner
First and foremost, it’s important to remember that this law does not actually ban gas appliances outright. If you still have a gas furnace or stove in your home, you won’t be forced to switch. This only means that new appliances of this kind won’t be sold and that if you need a replacement for an old appliance, you won’t be able to get one that runs on gas.
Until that replacement happens, you don’t really have to do anything as a homeowner. However, if your furnace or stove is getting old and faulty or you simply wish to upgrade, you’ll need to shop for a new zero-emission appliance to replace it. A less talked about aspect of the ban will help with this, as California now provides rebates for homeowners who change from gas to a zero-emission appliance as a means of offsetting the cost.
